Simple Graphic Design Techniques
Graphic design rules and principles are for bending, breaking and being pushed to the limits. But before you start trying out funky and wild things, you have to know the rules first!
So here is a list of the most basic principles for experimenting with graphic design.
This is the original graphic. Arial font, size 50. Nothing has been done to it.
Skew or italicize.
The line weight can be changed to make it look heavier or lighter.
All small case. All upper case. Both. Random.
Change to a san serif font (without feet) to a serif font (with feet). Or vice versa.
Change to a decorative font. Script. Handwriting.
Wide or naorrow. Creates casual relaxation, or uptight tension between the objects.
Extra large. Large. Medium. Small. Extra small.
Create tight or loose spaces. Play with the tension it creates. Try over lapping too.
Break up the letters or objects.
Experiment with placing of the repeated objects.
Combine various techniques.
Replace some object with other objects. Use visuals.
Add geometric or free-form shapes to add interest. Try reversing the colour of the text.
Use lines to break up the space surrounding or inside the object. Try vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines.
Use typographic elements to add interest.
